Eclectic Collection Number 5 – 2004 Bowman Barry Zito

The Player

Barry Zito utilized a devastating curveball to become a strong lefty pitcher in the early part of the 21st century with the Oakland Athletics. His biggest year was in 2002, when he went 23 – 5 to win the American League Cy Young award. After the 2006 season, he became a free agent and signed with the San Francisco Giants. His contract was the highest ever for a pitcher at the time, seven years and 126 million dollars. He has struggled since then and has not lived up to the massive contract he signed. He is also known for his idiosyncratic nature, including music and yoga.

The Set

Bowman baseball cards, such as this 2004 card, are known for their rookie cards. They have sharp black borders and a facsimile autograph on the card. The tricky part is to remember which design is what year.

The Back

This set features a card back the displays last year’s statistics and career statistics, which is common place. It also discusses the player’s resume and skill set which discusses the big curveball. It also mentioned his Triple A season in 2000 and shows a narrow photo as well.Image
