Eclectic Collection Number 7 – 1990 Donruss Gary Carter

The Player

Nicknamed, “the kid”, Gary Carter was a dynamic catcher on the field, and a well respected gentleman in the clubhouse and off the field. He was an 11 time All Star, three time Gold Glove award winner and five time Silver Slugger award winner with the Montreal Expos and New York Mets and also had brief appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. Sadly, he passed away after a long cancer battle on February 16, 2012.

The Set

The 1990 Donruss set is the very essence of the “junk wax” era. It was overproduced on an epic scale and, as a result, the cards are basically worthless. While a lot of cards from this era use action shots, this card is a simple portrait. I am guessing that they used a portrait because Gary only played in 50 games in 1989.

The Back

Two things stand out to me on this back, first is the two 100 RBI seasons in 1985 and 1986  which is big for a catcher and the second is the fact they included stolen bases, even though Gary was not a base stealing threat, heck he wasn’t even a base stealing whisper (36 career).

Rest in Peace, Gary Carter
