Eclectic Collection Number 38 – 1969 Transogram Roberto Clemente

The Player

Much like Jackie Robinson, today’s subject was the target of bigotry and was a symbol of grace under pressure. Roberto Clemente was the star of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 – 1972. In that time, Clemente was a fifteen time All Star and a twelve time gold glove award winner. He won the NL MVP in 1966 and the World Series MVP in 1971. He was also a batting champion four times, in 1961, 1964 1965 and 1967.  He also finished his career with a .317 average and exactly 3000 hits. His life was cut short on New Year’s Eve 1972.

The Set

This is probably something you have not seen in mainstream card collecting. It is from the 1969 Transogram set. This was a set of small plastic statues, which came with a card on the back panel. The cards became as popular as the statues. A set like this is why I enjoy building this set so much.

The back

Is blank.
