This is part 52 of Frankenset, a 1990 Topps Storm Davis. Storm pitched from 1982 to 1994 and won World Series titles with the 1983 Baltimore Orioles and the 1989 Oakland A’s. He also became one of the first free agent busts in baseball when he signed for 2 years and 6 million dollars after his 1989 season in which he went 19 – 7 with n ERA worse than league average (4.36). The reason Storm was able to get such a big contract after such a strange season could be this quote from Royals pitching coach Frank Funk, “We don’t want pitchers with good ERA’s. We want pitchers with wins.”
And now we know why the Royals have not been to the playoffs since I started watching baseball 25 years ago.
